Trading at quiet hours from Singapore: why spreads widen and what to do
Order books on Binance, OKX, Bybit and Bitget look different at different times of day. How traders in Singapore can notice thin liquidity, read the spread and adjust order type and size.
Multiple exchanges | Singapore | SGD | fees, access and account safety
Crypto trades around the clock, but liquidity does not stay constant. Depending on the pair, order books can be noticeably thinner during certain hours, and traders in Singapore are often awake when other regions are not. A market order that fills cleanly in the afternoon can cost more at three in the morning, simply because fewer orders sit near the best price. Knowing when your pairs are thin, and changing how you trade at those times, protects your average price.
Watch the same pair at different times
Pick two or three pairs you trade often and look at their order books at a few different times over a week: morning, afternoon, evening and late night in Singapore time. Note the gap between best bid and best ask and roughly how much is available within a few price levels. Patterns appear quickly. Major pairs may barely change, while smaller coins can show a much wider gap at certain hours.
Let the order form warn you
When you enter a quantity on a market order, read the estimated average price or cost if the exchange shows it. During quiet hours this estimate can diverge from the last traded price more than usual. If it does, take that as a signal. Reduce the size, wait for a busier period or switch to a limit order. A few seconds of reading prevents most surprises.
Adjust order type and size at quiet times
At hours when you know the book is thin, prefer limit orders at a price you accept and let them rest. If you must trade immediately, split the order into smaller pieces and pause briefly between them so the book can refill. Avoid placing large stop orders that convert to market orders on thin pairs overnight, since a sudden move can fill them far from the trigger.
Track your results by hour
After trades, compare the average fill price with the price you saw just before ordering, and note the time. Over a few weeks, group your notes by time of day. If late-night trades consistently show worse fills on certain pairs, schedule those trades for busier hours when you can. Keep fees on a separate line, checked against your own logged-in fee page.
